Day 3: Vocabulary

I know what you're probably expecting from this post.

You're sure I'm going to tell you about how our society lacks in their vocabulary, and how we need to expand our horizons, and how we need to explore further word usage!

Which is honestly all true (there's a reason why I have a "Word of the Day" app), but that post has been written a million and one times by every uppity white girl who ever had a blog SO-

I'm here to CELEBRATE the words we make up.

Yup.

Slang words.

I love them.

If you take a moment to really think about it, slang words are brilliant.

It takes an entire community of people to come together to decide on a new word or phrase that after repetition in conversation, will be used nationally, or even world wide.

Sure, maybe the world was a better place without "that's lit fam 2k17" but also, maybe it wasn't!

I encourage you look at the astounding magnitude of "slanguage" usage, and the impact that it has.

Whether we want to believe it or not, these words have the ability to define a week, a year, a time period, etc. When we nostalgically look back at the 1950's and giggle at the "aw gee pops" and "he's bad news" or even the "BLAST!", we are looking at the words that defined a time. How exciting is it to think that our generation, through not only social media but through our conversations, has the ability to shape an era?! Maybe it's a little ridiculous that we're saying sentences that resemble "Literally, her squad was V shady. I didn't even know someone could be that savage, they had me shook." But honestly I marvel at the fact that as a society we have come together to create a new way of speaking English.

That's crazy cool bro.

Someday someone is going to look back on all of these ridiculous words we created, and feel nostalgic for this time.

So, why not use all these words we have the privilege to help create?

It doesn't make us less intelligent to partake in shaping our vocabulary does it?

So yeah, go ahead and use words like "armamentarium", but also have fun with using words like "turnt" or "nontroversy" while you're at it. Every new word you learn is an expansion of vocabulary, and should be celebrated.

With Love Always,

Bailey
